The paper examines the legal implications associated with the development and deployment of autonomous weapons systems (AWS). As advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics continue to permeate military technology, the ethical and legal challenges posed by AWS have become increasingly pertinent. This study delves into the complexities surrounding the classification of AWS, examining whether they fall under existing international humanitarian law or if new regulations are required. It also analyzes the potential consequences of these systems on warfare, human rights, and the principle of distinction. Furthermore, the paper discusses the role of international bodies in crafting regulations to govern AWS, and the need for a holistic approach that considers technological evolution, ethical considerations, and the evolving nature of conflict. The analysis suggests that while AWS have the potential to revolutionize military capabilities, their integration requires a careful balance between technological advancement and legal constraints to ensure compliance with international law and the protection of human rights.
